A Benefit for SVVMF Scholarships

We are thrilled to announce the winner of the 2018 jewelry raffle: Christine Burel! Congratulations, Christine! Thank you all who participated. It was a great success!

These one-of-a-kind pieces were specially designed for the Sky Velvet Vassar Music Foundation by artist Lisa Donald through her Albuquerque-based jewelry company Buckaroo Holiday.  Lisa, a jeweler, concert cellist, mom, and President of the SVVMF Board of Directors, was also Sky’s cello teacher. She was deeply moved by Sky’s passion, dedication and natural inclination toward music, as well as her wisdom which shined so warmly through her thirteen years.

The title of this jewelry diptych, The Space Between Sea and Sky, is rooted in relationships: that which Lisa has with Sky Velvet, with music, and with the greater world as a mother of her two daughters, Pearl and Ysabel.  The Space is that where we live— not in the ocean or river, the beginning of a pearl’s creation, and not in the vastness that is the sky and all of our ideas of afterlife.  The Between.  The Now.

Each pearl hangs on a length of guitar string which was used to make music— an artistic medium that fills all the spaces— before becoming jewelry.  The pair of necklaces themselves are bass guitar strings, holding it all together.  Combined value of the pieces is $700. Tickets are $22 each or five for $100.
