Skybird Scholarship

I went to Hummingbird Music Camp... the experience changed my musical life. There are a handful of opportunities in life worth not missing. For me, Hummingbird is one of the first on the list.
- Ulysses Yarbrough, SVVMF Scholarship Recipient

The Sky Velvet Vassar Music Foundation provides Skybird Scholarships to inspire youth from New Mexico ages 8-14 to attend the Hummingbird Music Camp, a summer music and recreation camp located in Jemez Springs, New Mexico.

Nestled in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico, Hummingbird Music Camp offers every young musician an opportunity to grow under the guidance of a talented and nurturing staff. This safe and lovingly structured social environment provides a home away from home for young people to express themselves and their talents. Removed from city congestion, campers will sleep in a dorm with new friends, swim in the river, hike to a waterfall and practice their instruments outside.

Students selected for the Skybird Scholarship must demonstrate musical promise, a love of the arts, leadership, compassion, and a strong sense of community. The Sky Velvet Vassar Music Foundation will provide 1/3 of the camp tuition, 1/3 will be given in-kind by Hummingbird Camp and 1/3 will be contributed by the student. The 2019 camp tuition is $665 per week (plus taxes and fees).

Velvet Cello Scholarship

This one-time scholarship is open to any individual, school or program, serving student(s) ages 8-18. The award is a full-size (4/4) Lewis cello, made in Germany, and includes a hard case and a student bow. The cello has been appraised for $700, and together with the bow and case, has an estimated value of $900.

Applicants should write a short essay of 500 words or less and include a short video up to five minutes long describing and/or showing how this cello would enrich the life of the student or program. Feel free to get creative!  Scholarship deadline is August 1, 2019.  Please send essays and videos (or links to videos) to info@skyvelvetvassar.com or 3939 Rio Grande Blvd. NW, Suite 2, Albuquerque, NM 87107.  The Velvet Cello will be awarded on August 15, 2019.  Please include the NAME, PROGRAM (if applicable), and CONTACT INFORMATION (email and telephone) with the essay.

This cello was donated to the foundation by a father whose son played it throughout his high school years and traveled with it through Europe on tour with his Youth Symphony. The son is now living in New Zealand, which turned out to be a little too far to move the cello.  We are so excited to be able to offer this instrument with such a beloved history!
